For almost four decades, TJ Tacos Jalisco has been more than just a taco truck in Vallejo — it has been a community landmark, a family legacy, and a true story of perseverance. Owned by Vidal Rubio and his family, the food truck continues to serve authentic Mexican food with pride, flavor, and dedication.
From Oakland to Vallejo – A Pioneer in Taco Trucks
Vidal Rubio came to the United States at the young age of 14. Like many immigrants, he worked tirelessly in agriculture, construction, and restaurants before pursuing his passion for food. In 1986, he launched his first food truck in Oakland, California. Soon after, he relocated to Vallejo, becoming the first taco truck in the city at a time when “loncheras” were unheard of.
Despite early resistance to food trucks, Vidal stood firm. He fought for his right to operate, building a loyal customer base that followed him through multiple moves across Vallejo — from Nebraska Street to Dorado Street, then to Broadway and Texas Street. Wherever the business went, customers went too, proving that the food and service at TJ Tacos Jalisco spoke for themselves.
A Family-Owned Business Rooted in Community
For Vidal, the business has always been about more than just selling tacos — it has been about family and community. His children grew up around the truck, and today some of them are beginning to follow in his footsteps, keeping alive the tradition of Mexican street food in Vallejo.
“Running a food truck is not easy,” Vidal shared during his interview. “There are good times and hard times. But thanks to our customers, who have supported us for nearly 40 years, we continue to push forward. The most important thing is to be consistent, have patience, and never give up.”
Even through recent economic challenges, TJ Tacos Jalisco has remained a staple for locals looking for authentic tacos, burritos, and Mexican food in Vallejo. Vidal takes pride in preparing meals with love and dedication, welcoming each customer as if they were family.
Honored by the Community
This year, the Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, together with the Moon Azteca Dance & Art School, recognized TJ Tacos Jalisco and the Rubio family during a special ribbon cutting ceremony. Moon Azteca presented a cultural performance in their honor, celebrating the family’s lasting impact on Vallejo.
“For nearly 40 years, your business has been more than just a place to enjoy delicious food — it has been a symbol of perseverance, family unity, and commitment to our community,” shared the Chamber. “On behalf of all who admire you, we thank you for so many decades of flavor, effort, and heart dedicated to Vallejo.”
Looking Ahead
As TJ Tacos Jalisco approaches its 40th anniversary, Vidal hopes the food truck continues to be remembered as “that corner spot where families can stop for something quick and delicious after a long day of work.” His wish is simple: that the name TJ Tacos Jalisco carries on for future generations.
